The domestic cabinet industry is a $12 billion industry that supports more than 250,000 American jobs and we have seen first-hand the devastating impact of China not playing by the rules.
For generations, thousands of great American craftsmen have carried out a unique tradition of making kitchen and other cabinets and vanities the American way, producing a strong, long-lasting, high-quality product.
But, the American cabinet making industry was at the brink of collapse in 2019 because of China’s predatory trade practices. In 2020, the U.S. Department of Commerce stepped in to put an end to China’s unfair practices and issued antidumping and countervailing (AD/CVD) orders up to 262% to protect the American industry and workers.
With a level playing field, the American cabinet industry has flourished.
Today, the American kitchen cabinet industry supports more than 250,000 American jobs and is a more than $12 billion industry. The AD/CVD duties are creating thousands of new American jobs with plant expansions recently announced in Georgia, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Washington State, South Dakota, and Alabama.
However, the industry is yet again at risk as the U.S. Department of Commerce is reviewing and recalculating the AD/CVD rates. This review will determine if the orders will remain in place or if Chinese companies will once again have the ability to engage in unfair trade practices.
If we allow China to re-enter the market they will not play by the rules, causing them to take control of the $12 billion domestic cabinet industry thereby killing American jobs and disproportionately impacting minorities and underserved communities who represent more than 40% of our workforce.
That is why the American Kitchen Cabinet Alliance and the Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association are calling on our leaders in office to stand up to China’s cheating and level the playing field for 250,000 American workers to protect this American industry.
